Following the advent of Islam in Iran, profound cultural and social transformations gave rise to entirely new concepts in both society and the arts. The spiritual influence of Islamic figures, scholars, and Alavid Sayyids among ordinary people and artists served as the primary driving force behind the creation of numerous significant artworks throughout the Islamic world. Among the many elements that define religious architecture, wooden tomb cenotaphs — structures that functioned as early forms of the zarih — occupy an essential position within the decorative and structural identity of mausoleums. These rectangular enclosures, crafted from wood, stone, or metal, ranged from elaborately ornamented to entirely plain, yet consistently served a dual purpose: acting as both symbolic markers of sanctity and protective covers over the graves of venerated religious figures.
The Tabarestan region, recognised as the historical birthplace of Shia governmental authority, has long stood as one of the foremost centres of woodcarving and holy shrine construction in Iran. The Tehran and Ray region also represents an important historical and religious landscape, containing a considerable number of imamzadehs alongside valuable wooden artefacts. This study classifies the structural features and analyses the thematic content of these works through a systematic comparative approach, concentrating on three key areas: the technical and visual typology of gereh-chini patterns; the spatial organisation governing the placement of geometric patterns across the various faces of the cenotaphs; and a content analysis of the base numbers within the dominant geometric patterns, interpreted through the framework of Shia religious teachings.
This study seeks to answer three central questions: what types of geometric patterns appear in the tomb cenotaphs of Tehran and Tabarestan in terms of execution technique and geometric structure; what placement logic governs the arrangement of designs across their different faces; and what religious themes are encoded within the base numbers of the dominant geometric patterns.
A comparative study of both regions is justified by several reasons. A historical and political connection existed between the Marashi rulers of Tabarestan and the religious centres of Ray and Tehran during the ninth and tenth centuries AH, suggesting the transfer of artistic models between the two areas. The climatic and workshop differences between the regions also help distinguish local characteristics from shared features. Examining either region alone would make it impossible to determine which features originated in local tradition and which derived from the shared religious-artistic logic of the era.
The study adopts a qualitative methodology with a descriptive-analytical and comparative approach. The statistical population consists of 34 wooden tomb cenotaphs dating to the ninth and tenth centuries AH — 10 from Tehran province and 24 from Tabarestan. Following screening that required precise construction inscriptions and clear photographic documentation, 7 cenotaphs from Tehran and 17 from Tabarestan were found to contain geometric patterns, bringing the final analytical population to 24 cenotaphs.
The technical analysis revealed that craftsmen primarily relied on two construction techniques: alat-o-laqat and qab-o-safheh. A refined subcategory known as gereh-chini-ye pook was identified as a variation of the alat-o-laqat structure. Out of 52 geometric patterns identified across all 24 cenotaphs, 25 employed the qab-o-safheh technique, while the remainder used alat-o-laqat, with six executed as hollow latticework. The most prevalent background decoration was the eslimi pattern, followed by khataei motifs, colouring, and painting.
Regarding pattern density, Tabarestan cenotaphs demonstrate greater variety and repetition. Patterns such as the "six and three davati"—repeated across ten cenotaphs — alongside the "half-eight shamseh" and "eight four-langeh," reveal a preference for dense, cohesive surface textures. By contrast, the Tehran cenotaphs predominantly employed complex patterns such as "ten tond" and "ten taraqeh," lending the work a more disciplined and geometrically rigorous character. The ratio of positive to negative spaces also differs markedly between the two regions. In Tabarestan, background areas are often left hollow, generating a natural play of light and shadow. In Tehran cenotaphs, these spaces are typically filled with floral motifs and coloring, resulting in a denser and more visually saturated surface.
Across both regions, the northern face consistently functions as the primary and most elaborately decorated surface. Because tomb cenotaphs are traditionally oriented parallel to the qibla direction, the northern face is where pilgrims stand when reciting prayers. In 18 out of 24 analyzed samples, the most significant design was placed at the center of the northern face, confirming that craftsmen made deliberate choices about directing visual attention toward the pilgrim.
The most significant divergence lies in how the remaining faces were treated. In Tehran, the eastern, western, and southern faces also carry independent geometric designs, reflecting a conception of the cenotaph as a complete four-sided object. In Tabarestan, decorative attention is concentrated almost entirely on the northern face, while remaining sides bear little or no ornamentation. This reveals two fundamentally different philosophies: the Tabarestan approach is single-axis and pilgrim-centered, while the Tehran approach is holistic and space-centered.
The content analysis reveals that numerical choices were not accidental. The number six, with 18 repetitions, is the most dominant value, referencing the six directions of the universe and constituting half of twelve — an allusion to the Twelve Imams. The number eight evokes the eighth Imam, Hazrat Reza, as well as the eight gates of paradise. The number five references the Panj-tan — the Five Pure Souls of the Prophet's household. The number four symbolizes the four classical elements and the four pillars of the Divine Throne, endowing the rectangular form of the cenotaph itself with cosmological significance.
This study demonstrates that the wooden tomb cenotaphs of Tehran and Tabarestan represent a sophisticated convergence of technical craftsmanship, spatial thinking, and encoded religious meaning. Despite their regional differences, both traditions share a common religious grammar expressed through geometry, numbers, and sacred symbolism, affirming the deep unity of Shia artistic thought across different regional contexts during the ninth and tenth centuries AH.
