One of the problems of research methodology in postgraduate degree of art fields is the common research methodology which have spread from the humanities without considering the nature of art so it does not help to develop the frontiers of art as an independent and powerful medium which its aim is to expanding the sense and perceptual experience of audience. Origin of practice-based research methodology in recent decades in world's universities have been the result of the inefficiency of conventional methods that are inconsistent with art, which has been invented following the efforts of research artists in postgraduate studies, especially PHD. In this research method, the researcher artist has the freedom of action and creates artwork by using methods appropriate to her/his research project. The creation of an artwork has research support and is constantly evaluated and modified by the researcher and the audiences. The artwork resulting from this type of research, while being original, has a theoretical framework and documents of all stages are recorded, so it can be understood and transmitted to the audiences. Practice- based research methodology was based on creating artwork which has uniquely replaced the previous conventional methods by asking the question, what is the place and value of art and design in society? Encourage us to engage in wise social dialogue with clear and critical thinking and expression through a detailed paradigm and create a new culture for understanding and supporting society. This article tries to analyze the methodology of research of PHD dissertation in the field of Handicrafts, while introducing this research method, opens a new window for professors and students in order to restore the main goal of art research, which is to expand the boundaries of art.
